Spent a year experimenting with alum-to-wool ratios for natural dyeing. Settled on 12% alum + 6% cream of tartar by dry weight of wool. Soak for 1 hour at 80°C, slow cool overnight. The extra cream of tartar makes a noticeable difference in lightfastness — especially with madder and weld.
