After photographing a few hundred ceramic pieces, the best background I've found is a piece of unbleached linen with side daylight from a north-facing window. Costs almost nothing and makes the glaze pop without color-casting. If you're shooting on a phone: tap to set focus on the rim, then drag the exposure slider down a notch.
